Microsoft leads the IT security community a bit surprising news with its fixes included for the newly released Windows 7 in its recent October 2009 Patch security update.
According to the principal architect for Windows 7 Malware Protection Center, Jimmy Kuo, they expect high from the new Windows 7 release, which can be observed as the major turning point where the malware writers have met their match.
As per the report, Microsoft's observations are based on data being reported back from its Malicious Software Removal Tool that is present on the 450 million computers. Though, Bing, having a history of scanning billions of Web page in the last few months. Windows Live OneCare and Windows Defender are those applications, which have a background to run on more than 100 million computers. And, Forefront Online Protection for Exchange and Forefront Client Security, with a scan rate of billions of e-mail messages a year.
As per a report, rogue security software has been the only largest threat category for the first half of 2009. The Talk which helped Microsoft in concluding about the data is summarized as, they detected and cleaned rogue security software off of 13.4 million computers. Which has dropped from 16.8 million last year, but the situation is still a significant threat. It is also known as scareware, which takes the benefit of customers' need of keeping their computers protected. A box will be shown which will warn the user that their computer has been infected and the given program must be downloaded for cleaning their system. After seeing such a threatening message, the user agrees to download the program which will harm their computer, and this is the point when they become a victim.
As per the report, the old style worms are making their reverse journey to comeback. In the first half of 2009, the worms showed a 98.4 percent increase as they were promoted from fifth place so as to become the second most prevalent threat category in the latest report. Worms are dependent on the access made to unsecured file sharing and removable storage mediums, as these two tasks are carried out in a large quantity in the enterprises environments.
Conficker was among some of the more pervasive malware threats which was the most dangerous and the highly worm threat detected for the enterprise. This was due its method of propagation and growth, which worked more effectively and effectively within a firewalled network environment.
The multiplayer online role playing games are mostly targeted by Taterf and has made a tremendous growth from 156 percent from 2 million in the year 2008 to 4.9 million in the year 2009.
The online game requires certain login details, which are known only to the user. But such confidential information are illegally accesses by Win32 or Taterf. They propagate by making several copies of it in the root of all the fixed and removable drives on the system infected with malware threats. They ensure that they get executed by creating an autorun.inf file.
The newer the operating system, the less malware will be found due to the higher patch rate. All the previous patches have been worked into the new Windows 7, which have a positive impact.
